Wayne Rooney's hat-trick helped guide Manchester United to victory over bottom-of-the table Portsmouth.
Rooney put the visitors ahead from the spot after he was brought down by Michael Brown only for Kevin-Prince Boateng's penalty to haul Pompey level.
Ryan Giggs crossed for Rooney to slot in and the Welsh winger was then fouled to allow the England striker to grab his third with a second penalty.
Giggs added a late free-kick as United kept the pressure on leaders Chelsea.
The win moved United to within two points of Premier League table-toppers Chelsea, who play Arsenal on Sunday.
It was Giggs' 100th Premier League goal and capped a performance of vision and verve which has been the trademark of an illustrious career - and this a day ahead of the his 36th birthday.
Modest Rooney praises Giggs' form
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had to watch from the stands as he began the first of a two-game touchline ban and, in an even first half, it was far from comfortable viewing for the Scot before his team eased away to victory.
Portsmouth had new manager Avram Grant in charge and, although he will take encouragement from the display, he knows his side need to start converting some promising play into points.
The Fratton Park side have bemoaned a lack of fortune this season with seven of 10 Premier League defeats being by the odd goal.
They certainly did not lack a fight and fervour to their play against United but it was a lack of composure in front of goal against the top-flight champions rather than luck which proved their downfall.
Striker Aruna Dindane was Pompey's main culprit as he squandered three gilt-edged chances and capitalise on an early spell of pressure.
Dindane was played in behind the United defence by Prince-Boateng but took too long to get his shot off and United keeper Tomasz Kuszczak quickly came out to smother the danger.
Ivorian Dindane then sent a 22-yard shot just wide and also headed past the post from 10 yards when unmarked as he met an inviting cross from Jamie O'Hara.
Kuszczak had also tipped over a 20-yard strike from O'Hara which was bound for the top corner as United were unusually forced on to the back foot.
However, the visitors have the type of players capable of turning defence into attack in an instant and duly did so as they punished Pompey's profligacy.
Rooney exchanged passes with Antonio Valencia as the pair led a swift United counter-attack before the England striker won a penalty after being fouled by Brown.
The Pompey midfielder protested his innocence but television replays appeared to show Brown catching Rooney, who picked himself up to calmly score from the penalty spot.
To their credit, Pompey continued to force the issue and were given a route back into the game when they were also awarded a penalty.
Grant questions penalty decisions
United centre-back Nemanja Vidic appeared to be harshly punished for tugging at Frederic Piquionne's shirt as they went up for an O'Hara free-kick and Prince-Boateng, who missed a spot-kick last week, made no mistake this time.
Dindane headed wide as he spurned another chance, while Paul Scholes had a shot deflected narrowly wide as the game developed into a sparky affair.
But any hopes Portsmouth had of causing an upset suffered a major setback as United raised their game after the break, with Giggs setting up Rooney's second goal.
Giggs was found by a Darren Fletcher ball from midfield and immediately curled in a ball for Rooney to slot past keeper Asmir Begovic.
Giggs's persistence then saw him win the ball back off Piquionne, who brought down the midfielder to leave referee Mike Dean little choice but to award a third penalty of the match.
Rooney completed his hat-trick - his third for the Old Trafford outfit - by sending Begovic the wrong way to give United some breathing space before Giggs curled a 22-yard free-kick into the bottom corner.
Pompey continued to battle on and John Utaka hit the crossbar but the visitors, ultimately, proved too strong.

In response to the astounding revelations arising out of the hacked CRU emails, Senator Jim Inhofe has stated that unless something is done within the next seven days, he will lead the call for a rigorous investigation into mounting evidence that top climate scientists conspired to manipulate data to hide evidence of global cooling while engaging in academic witch hunts to eliminate scientists skeptical of man-made climate change.
Speaking on the Americas Morning Show earlier today, Inhofe, Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said the new revelations proved what he has been warning about for over four years, that politicians and bias-driven climate scientists affiliated with the UN IPCC have been fraudulently “cooking the science” to conform to their agenda.
“If nothing happens in the next seven days when we go back into session a week from today that would change this situation, I will call for an investigation,” said Inhofe. “Cause this thing is serious, you think about the literally millions of dollars that have been thrown away on some of this stuff that they came out with.”
Asked what he would call for an investigation of, Inhofe responded, “On the IPCC and on the United Nations on the way that they cooked the science to make this thing look as if the science was settled, when all the time of course we knew it was not.”
Meanwhile, even some pro-man made global warming advocates have conceded that an investigation is necessary.
Bob Ward, director of policy and communications at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics, told the London Guardian that only a rigorous investigation could clear the names of those accused of manipulating the data, admitting that the emails “created the impression of impropriety,” which is a lot further than most have gone in accepting the damning nature of the hacked data.
Indeed, the British Met Office performed the equivalent of a child sticking his fingers in his ears by merely attempting to dismiss the emails altogether, without even explaining what was meant when scientists at CRU talked about pulling “tricks” to “hide the decline” in temperatures.
A spokesman at the Met Office, which jointly produces global temperature datasets with the Climate Research Unit, said there was no need for an inquiry. “If you look at the emails, there isn’t any evidence that the data was falsified and there’s no evidence that climate change is a hoax. It’s a shame that some of the sceptics have had to take this rather shallow attempt to discredit robust science undertaken by some of the world’s most respected scientists. The bottom line is that temperatures continue to rise and humans are responsible for it. We have every confidence in the science and the various datasets we use. The peer-review process is as robust as it could possibly be. It’s no surprise, with the Copenhagen talks just days away, that this has happened now.”
As James Delingpole of the Telegraph highlights, alarmists are not going to be effected by the scandal, because they will allow nothing whatsoever to corrupt their religious belief system. “They’ve made up their minds and no quantity of contrary evidence, however devastating, is going to shake their considered position of “Nyah nyah nyah. Got my fingers in my ears. Not listening. The world IS warming and it’s man’s fault. Must tax carbon now….”
However, there seems little doubt that this bombshell will go a long way to derailing, or at least delaying the agenda for a global carbon tax that will be collected by the very same elitists aggressively pushing the fraud of global warming.

Defoe 'best finisher in England'
Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp believes Jermain Defoe has booked his place in Fabio Capello's 2010 World Cup squad after a five-goal burst against Wigan.
The striker's stunning salvo in the 9-1 win was the best haul for a player in a Premier League match for a decade.
Redknapp said: "He's an amazing finisher. Wayne Rooney's fantastic - a complete all-round player - but as a finisher, Defoe is the best out there.
"I'm sure he'll go to the World Cup. Fabio will see the goals he's scored."
Defoe's goals all came in a rampaging second-half performance at White Hart Lane.
The strikes vaulted him to the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts, a timely reminder for Capello, who has not made Defoe an automatic pick.
The 27-year-old forward, who suffered World Cup heartache when missing out in favour of Theo Walcott under Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2006, made a compelling case for inclusion this time.
And his manager highlighted his improved strength as an important factor as Defoe matched Alan Shearer's five-goal total for Newcastle against Sheffield Wednesday in 1999.
Redknapp stated: "He's got stronger this season and is using his upper body strength a bit more and holding people off and Capello will be impressed."
Peter Crouch, Aaron Lennon and Niko Kranjcar also scored against Wigan, while David Bentley's free-kick went in after hitting the bar and rebounding off Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.
Defoe put his shooting boots on after a last-minute change of footwear in the warm-up.
"I had a funny feeling before the game," revealed Defoe. "Adidas gave me a pair of green boots and I tried them on before the game but [development coach] Clive Allen said I couldn't wear them, so I changed them. They were pinkish silver ones in the end and I go and score five."
Defoe paid tribute to Lennon for his assists and added: "Azza made the difference. He's so direct. When you've got someone with that pace in the team, he's so direct it's just easy for everyone.
"He gets the ball, you just leave him in a one on one and get in the box. Two fantastic crosses, which I made sure my movement was right for, and I got on the end of them and scored."
Spurs are back into the Champions League places in the Premier League in fourth spot, level on points with rivals Arsenal, who lost to Sunderland on Saturday but who are in third place on goal difference.
"Winning games brings confidence but we can't get complacent. We must go to the next game, which is Villa away, and try to get three points again," commented Defoe.
It was also Defoe's second hat-trick of the Premier League campaign and came after he had missed three games for stamping against Portsmouth on 17 October.
Redknapp added: "The England manager will have watched the red card against Pompey and Defoe can't react that way but he's come back strong. When he concentrates and plays his football, he can be unstoppable."
Defoe notched his final goal after 87 minutes and joins Shearer and Andy Cole as the third player to score five times in a Premier League fixture.
"Even when I got the fifth I wanted another and another," said Defoe.
"I was still looking for more. I think you have to be that way. I was definitely in the zone.
"Now it is important for me to keep my head and to go back to training and focus on the next game."

I considered quitting, says Henry
Thierry Henry thought about quitting international football following his handball in last week's World Cup play-off win over the Republic of Ireland.
The striker found himself at the centre of a huge fall-out after the incident, which helped France beat Ireland and book a place in South Africa.
And when asked if he had considered retiring amid the controversy, he told French newspaper L'Equipe: "Oh yes.
"Friday, when it all went too far, I was very worked up."
The Football Association of Ireland wrote to Fifa to ask that the match be replayed on the back of the incident, which saw Henry blatantly handle the ball before setting up William Gallas for the goal which secured a 1-1 draw and a 2-1 aggregate victory.
That request was rejected despite Henry released a statement saying a replay would be the "fairest solution".
The FAI admitted defeat over the weekend when the French Football Federation backed Fifa by stating that a replay would not be a viable option.
Henry admitted, however, that the "cheat" storm prompted him to seriously consider his future in the game - and not for the first time.
"After the 2006 World Cup, I thought about it, but it was too early," he said. "After Euro 2008, too, but it wasn't the right moment. There was a generation that needed me.
"Despite everything that has just happened and the fact that I felt let down, I will not let my country down."
The 32-year-old, who has scored a French record 51 goals from 117 internationals, criticised the FFF for their lack of support.
"The day after the match, and the day after that, I felt alone, really alone," he said. "It was only after I issued my statement that the people from the French Federation got in touch."

Amazon gets set for cyber Monday as Christmas shopping online clicks
Internet retailers are preparing for a deluge of online orders on their busiest day of the year in the lead-up to Christmas.
In a vast warehouse, the size of eight football pitches and around 15 minutes from the centre of Milton Keynes, more than a thousand workers are gearing up for what will likely be Amazon's busiest Christmas yet.
Products from kettles to keyboards, ping pong balls to DVD box sets are stacked densely on four floors of shelves, on a structure known as the "library tower", a large edifice in the middle of the distribution centre. As the business has grown the company has built up toward the eaves of the warehouse. Pickers weave their way through, shoving items in yellow plastic crates and sending them on a conveyor belt for packing, like latter-day elves.
The top floor of the tower offers a view across the docking area where the goods arrive, stacked in cardboard boxes and resembling Rachel Whiteread's show in the Turbine Hall of the Tate Modern, when the artist cast the insides of 14,000 boxes.
With Christmas approaching, online retailers are readying for what has become known as "cyber Monday", the busiest internet shopping day of the year that commonly falls on the first Monday of December. On cyber Monday last year, 8 December, Amazon claims that 1.4m items were ordered from its UK site, over 16-items per second and the most it has ever received in a single 24-hour period. This year, Amazon is forecasting that sales will be 21% to 36% higher. It has hired several hundred extra workers for the Christmas period.
The firm has contracts with several delivery firms as well as Royal Mail and maintains that it would be unaffected by any potential disputes. "This will without doubt be our busiest Christmas ever," said Allan Lyall, vice president for European operations. "Around this time of year we are looking at two to three times our normal run rate. Last year a delivery truck was leaving the warehouse every five and a half seconds."
Milton Keynes is one of four Amazon distribution centres in Britain – there are two in Scotland and the largest is in Swansea. Milton Keynes appears to be the land of distribution centres. There is an even larger John Lewis warehouse on the way to Amazon, serving the stores and customers of the John Lewis website, and giving the impression that, sensibly enough, not much hangs around in Milton Keynes for very long.
Amazon has set up a fifth temporary centre in Peterborough to help it cope with the Christmas demand.
Like high-street retailers, online shops have not been immune to the recession. But as the high street faces another possible bloodbath, many online retailers are at least still growing, owing to the deepening penetration of broadband, consumers becoming more comfortable buying online and cash-strapped shoppers hunting for bargains.
Figures for the growth of online shopping vary. According to the Office for National Statistics, online sales accounted for 3.5% of total retail sales during December last year, with average weekly sales of £238m. But if the percentage is still relatively small, it is growing. The ONS said online sales during that month were up 19.6% on the previous year.
IMRG, an industry group that represents internet retailers, perhaps not surprisingly reckons the figure is much higher, although it also includes ticketing and travel. It suggests that internet sales now make up between 10% and 15% of total retail sales in Britain.
Amazon has grown steadily since it was launched in 1998 and claims 98m people worldwide have bought something from one of its sites in the past year. The Seattle-based business has broadened its range from books, most recently starting a UK online shoe shop, and moving into office equipment and lighting – although media, including books and DVDs, still account for a little over half of Amazon's global sales. It has worked its way back into investors' affections and last month its share price on Wall Street surpassed its peak during the dotcom boom for the first time.
David Smith, director of operations at IMRG, says the fastest growing categories online are clothing and electricals. Recent results from Asos, the online fashion retailer, would certainly appear to partly support that. The company last week reported operating profits of £4.4m for the six months to the end of September and sales in the UK were running 33% higher than the same period a year earlier.
"The rate of growth has slowed because of current economic conditions, but sales online are still growing," Smith said. IMRG is forecasting growth of online sales of around 15% this year, compared to previous rates of 35% to 50%. "More and more people are doing their research online as well and comparing prices, so the influence of the internet is still growing. We are seeing more women shopping online and an older age group, just as they are using things like Facebook, and they are the people with the disposable income."
The likes of Amazon and Asos are facing increasing competition from the high-street brands, many of which are beginning to take online retailing more seriously. When John Lewis launched its website in 2001, the aim was to eventually generate the sales of a medium-sized store – about £100m. Last year they reached £327m, outstripping its most successful department store and accounting for about 13% of the John Lewis division of the group. Online sales continue to grow at about 30% a year.
Robin Terrell, managing director of John Lewis Direct, says the site has become increasingly important as around half of all shopping visits start with the website, as customers research prices and range. "The website now represents the brand. People are researching more and more online before visiting the shop and we have really been working to join up the customer experience."
Because websites are easily compared, competition comes down to range and prices. John Lewis boasts that its 650,000 square feet centre makes extensive use of technology to lower costs. Amazon makes similar claims. Its site in Milton Keynes is driven by software to improve efficiency. Handheld devices tell the pickers where items are and even work out the most efficient route through the labyrinth of shelving; software works out the dimensions of the products and tells the packers how big the boxes should be and how much stuffing needs to be used for fragile items.
They are also competing on speed and delivery charges. "Logistics used to be the oily bit, but it is now sexy," says Terrell. In London and Birmingham this year, Amazon is guaranteeing delivery ahead of the big day for any orders received before 8.30am on Christmas Eve, for a fee. "There is still a lot of growth out there," says Lyall. "Competition is only a good thing for customers because it encourages us all to innovate."
Speedier delivery times mean that cyber Monday might lose some of its potency in the years ahead, as shoppers worry less about their gifts arriving on time. But there is also another reason. Smith said cyber Monday evolved because shoppers would see things on the high street over the first weekend of December and then use the faster broadband speeds in their offices to place an order. As more homes get broadband, that becomes less relevant. "If you draw a graph of broadband penetration in the home from about 2006, then the growth in online shopping is very similar."

Nate Robinson Wrong Basket Shot Is Funny, Stupid And Wonderful
It’s not too often in the NBA that you get to see a player take a shot at the wrong basket, but that’s exactly what Nate Robinson did in a recent Knicks-Nets game.
The shot occurred with half a second left on the clock in the first quarter of play. Apparently Robinson thought time had run out and turned to take what he thought was an invalid shot, but in fact was performed before the buzzer.
After the shot you can see Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni yelling at Robinson. Here’s our question, why didn’t he just throw it at his own basket, it may have at least scored his team some points.
The Nicks still won, but Nate Robinson will have a hard time living down this wrong basket shot.

HENRY: REPLAY `FAIREST SOLUTION`
France captain Thierry Henry has admitted replaying the World Cup qualification play-off against the Republic of Ireland would be "the fairest solution".
The Barcelona forward has also spoken of his "embarrassment" at the manner of Les Bleus' victory over the Irish.
"Naturally I feel embarrassed at the way that we won and feel extremely sorry for the Irish who definitely deserve to be in South Africa," said Henry, whose handball in the build-up to William Gallas' equaliser on Wednesday night enabled the French to go through 2-1 on aggregate.
"Of course the fairest solution would be to replay the game but it is not in my control."
"I have said at the time and I will say again that yes I handled the ball. I am not a cheat and never have been.
"It was an instinctive reaction to a ball that was coming extremely fast in a crowded penalty area.
"As a footballer you do not have the luxury of the television to slow the pace of the ball down 100 times to be able to make a conscious decision.
"People are viewing a slow motion version of what happened and not what I or any other footballer faces in the game.
"If people look at it in full speed you will see that it was an instinctive reaction.
"It is impossible to be anything other than that. I have never denied that the ball was controlled with my hand. I told the Irish players, the referee and the media this after the game.
"Of course the fairest solution would be to replay the game but it is not in my control.
"There is little more I can do apart from admit that the ball had contact with my hand leading up to our equalising goal and I feel very sorry for the Irish."
But a statement from the French Football Federation (FFF) read: "The FFF understands the disappointment and bitterness of the Irish players, management and supporters.
"The federation never sought to deny the refereeing error which saw the equalising French goal allowed.
"During matches, decisions are taken by the referee and these decisions are final. As a result, the result of the match cannot be changed and the match cannot be replayed."

Oprah Winfrey is an American media personality, actress, television producer, literary critic and magazine publisher, best known for her self-titled, multi-award winning talk show, which has become the highest-rated program of its kind in history.
She has been ranked the richest African American of the 20th century, the most philanthropic African American of all time, and was once the world's only black billionaire. She is also, according to some assessments, the most influential woman in the world.
It is not only the fans who will be the losers, but CBS too. The company will miss the hundreds of millions that "The Oprah Winfrey Show" was bringing in license fees and advertising revenue over the years.
Others who are not happy with the development include ABC.
The spectacular show was carried by many of its big city stations, attracting a sizeable audience to their local news.
Sony is also upset as it was trying to get the distribution rights to Winfrey's daytime show away from CBS when her deal expired.
Winfrey herself may suffer in the short-term. Showbiz experts say that financially she may lose some bucks by quitting daytime talk. But the decision is going to help her in long term because she would be building an asset.
However, with no words from Winfrey and OWN it is very difficult to jump to any conclusion. The talk show queen is planning to have an appearance on the channel when it launches.
Many say she will do a daily show. But this would be slightly different from what she has been doing for a long time. OWN will benefit from it the most.
In the meantime five year old child Shania Davis' fater Lockhart, appeared on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" via satellite and said he was told that Antoinette Davis had trafficked their daughter to pay off a drug debt. Lockhart told Winfrey that the child was the result of a one-night stand and that Davis had raised Shaniya for the first year of her life before asking him to provide a more stable environment.

The toxicology report took three months to release. According to AP, Saints’ Brees had asked his mother to stop using his face in pictures during her run for a 2006 appeals court seat. Brees had once said he and his mother stopped talking years ago.

Manny Pacquiao makes history with 12th-round WBO defeat of Miguel Cotto
Pacquiao, who started his professional career at 107lb at flyweight, suggested he would not be going any further up through the weights. "This is the last weight division I'm going to fight in and I think my trainer will be happy to hear that because 154 is too big for me and 147 is my regular weight," he said.
Some had claimed this would be the toughest test of Pacquiao's career, and yet Cotto's punches bounced off the Filipino, who nullified his opponent's power and did not apear to get hurt once during the contest.
With a game plan clinically exacted, Pacquiao first lured Cotto into attacking him, soaked up the pressure and counter-punched, and then eased to dominance from the middle rounds onwards. Pacquiao thereafter dominated the stanzas, alternating between sitting back on the ropes and all-out blistering attacks, opening up a cut over the Puerto Rican's left eye.
Pacquiao's slashing attacks in round 12, the final round, caused referee Kenny Bayless to step in to stop the damaged Puerto Rican taking any more punishment after 55 seconds.
Coach Freddie Roach had said that Pacquiao would win through "speed and power", and he was vindicated. Pacquiao certainly remains a special fighter.
Pacquiao (50 wins three losses, two draws) claimed the WBO welterweight title by reducing Cotto to a slow fighter, who could only dance and survive for the last few rounds, until he was stopped in the 12th.
Roach believes a super-fight with Floyd Mayweather would cement the Filipino's legacy. "The whole world wants to see him fight Mayweather and I want Mayweather," Roach said.
Observers ran out of superlatives to describe Mayweather's stunning performance in picking apart Juan Manuel Marquez a month ago at the same venue, and the scene is now set. Who really is the world's No 1 pound-for-pound fighter? Mayweather or Pacquiao.
What is clear is that regardless of the weaknesses of Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton _ defeated in the last year by Pacquiao – the boxing world has a major fight on its hands. It will require intricate deals, but it is a fight which boxing needs.
Pacquiao now looks capable of stretching Mayweather further than ever before. Expect months of wrangling before an early summer fight in Las Vegas. The world now has a right to know which of the two is the rightful pound for pound No 1.
"My job is to fight in the ring and I think that depends on Bob Arum, my promoter, to negotiate that fight," Pacquiao said.
Pacquiao's place in history
Manny Pacquiao has made history by rising through seven divisions from being World Boxing Council flyweight champion to becoming the World Boxing Organisation welterweight champion.
In that journey, he has won seven world titles. In the last 21 months, Pacquiao has beaten the three No 1 fighters in three divisions – Juan Manuel Márquez for the WBC super-featherweight title, David Diaz for the WBC lightweight title, and now Miguel Cotto for the WBO welterweight title.
That matches Henry 'Melody’ Armstrong Jr, from Missisippi, who went, between 1938-40, from being world featherweight champion through world lightweight champion to world welterweight champion, holding all titles concurrently.

Irish politicians demand a replay of World Cup play-off after Thierry Henry handball
Fifa on Thursday refused to publicly rule out the prospect of a rematch in the wake of Thierry Henry's handball offence prior to France's decisive goal.
Henry admitted to handling the ball in the build-up to William Gallas's goal, which cancelled out Robbie Keane's strike and ensured World Cup qualification for the French in the Stade de France 2-1 on aggregate.
A day of anger in Ireland culminated with the Taoiseach [the head of the government of Ireland] Brian Cowen, backing Football Association of Ireland calls for a replay and confirming that he would "probably have a chat about it [with French President Nicolas Sarkozy] away from the table" at this week's European Union summit in Brussels.
The FAI on Thursday dispatched letters to Fifa and the FFF calling for the "integrity of the game" to be upheld by the staging of a replay.
With the FAI estimating that failure to qualify for South Africa will cost the organisation €15 million (£13.5 million), an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport is also being considered should calls for a replay be rejected.
But despite issuing a statement earlier in the day pointing to law five of the Laws of the Game, which states that the decisions of the referee "regarding facts connected with play, including whether or not a goal is scored and the result of the match, are final", senior Fifa officials are understood to be reluctant to state their position publicly until the French have responded to the Irish.
The FAI has pointed to Fifa's decision to order a replay of the Asian Confederation World Cup play-off between Uzbekistan and Bahrain in 2005 due to a 'technical error' by the referee as a relevant precedent for the calls for a rematch.
The restaged FA Cup tie between Arsenal and Sheffield United in 1998, played following a controversial goal scored by Arsenal after United had kicked the ball out of play for the treatment of an injured player, has also been highlighted by the Irish.
And FAI chief executive John Delaney insists that both Fifa and the FFF have a duty to the game to ensure that the play-off fixture is replayed.
Delaney said: "It's up to the French federation. If they came out in the next 24 hours, I think Fifa would go with that.
"If there is goodwill, you can solve all these things. From a French federation point of view, they need to look at themselves. Thierry Henry is their captain and a wonderful footballer, but does he want to be remembered like Maradona where his legacy is a handball?
"I spoke with the French federation president and he said it was a handball. They have to step up to the plate.
"This is not just one football match. This is the whole world looking. There is a team that should be in the World Cup and that's us. We should be there.
"If I was the president of the French federation, I would want to go to South Africa deserving to be there. It was a travesty on Wednesday night, an injustice.
"Every time I got to a Fifa Congress, I hear about fair play and integrity. If Fifa really believe in fair play and integrity, this is their opportunity to step forward."
Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni has claimed it would be 'impossible' to have a replay and Fifa is known to be reluctant to impose such an eventuality.
However, with diplomatic pressure now being applied on the French by senior figures within the Irish government, Fifa is unlikely to block a rematch should the French agree to Irish demands.

Alexandra is the eldest child of Sen. John Kerry. She is an aspiring film producer and director, and has done some acting. Her younger sister is Vanessa, and both girls were from Sen. Kerry's first marriage, which ended in divorce in 1988.
Kerry raised eyebrows at the height of her father's unsuccessful campaign for president in 2004 with an appearance in a see-through gown on the red-carpet at the Cannes film festival. Her short film, "The Last Full Measure," premiered that year.

Jane Carrey and Alex Santana: Married!
Jane Carrey, daughter of Jim Carrey, walked down the aisle last weekend escorted by her actor dad as she tied the knot with musician Alex Santana.
"It was a beautiful day. Very simple and sweet," the funnyman said of the wedding in a statement. "I wish them everything that love has given us."

Shaniya's Shame...
The murder of 5-year-old Shaniya Davis, whose body was recently found abandoned in a wooded area of North Carolina, is yet another gruesome reminder of the pervasive violence against girls. Shaniya’s mother, Antoinette Davis, is charged with trafficking her daughter and child abuse involving prostitution.
Shaniya’s story is a heartbreaking one. And it—finally—highlights the issue of sexual violence and exploitation of girls—a problem that is becoming more rampant within U.S. borders. But in one respect, Shaniya’s case is an aberration. Most girls are trafficked by men and pimps, not their mothers.
How many times a month, or in the duration of a year, do we learn of the rape, kidnapping and murder of a girl? In the context of a civilized society, the epidemic level of violence against our girls remains an irreconcilable contradiction.
Here are the unacceptable facts of violence against girls: It cuts across any divide of race, class, ethnicity and educational background. One in four girls will experience some form of sexual violence by the time she reaches 18. Teenaged girls of all races, from across the economic spectrum, are four times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape or sexual assault. For girls and women ages 15-44, homicide is the leading cause of death. And then there are the countless faces of girls listed as missing in newspapers, on milk cartons or posted signs.
So many of them, like Shaniya, were also subject to being trafficked. It is presently less risky and more profitable to sell girls rather than illegal drugs. As evidenced by the war on drugs or the fierce police response to the trafficking of meth, there are severe repercussions in a culture of crime and punishment for illegal drug trafficking. There is a significantly less punitive culture for selling girls. Rarely do pimps or clients receive serious prison sentences for exploiting girls.
What is happening that girls’ lives are worth so little?
Perversely, it is the girls—not the men—who suffer from any kind of criminalization of trafficking. Girls who’ve been trafficked frequently end up arrested for prostitution; prostitution is among the leading reasons for girls’ incarceration. Girls arrested for prostitution are detained in juvenile facilities, where they are often subject to more incidents of sexual abuse by the staff.
In the juvenile justice system, 73 percent of girls have been subject to sexual abuse prior to incarceration. A recent Oregon Social Learning Center study of chronically delinquent girls found that the median age of first sexual encounter among detained girls was 7. The typical age of a girl being trafficked is 14.
And remember, these are not girls from other countries. They are American girls, girls from places like Dayton, Ohio and Compton, Calif. In small towns and large urban areas, they are kidnapped or tricked by pimps into a life of prostitution.
I first encountered these vulnerable girls as a law student trying to think about how to bring the issue of women’s rights as human rights home to the U.S. During those years, I met young women in Washington, D.C., Ohio and California who had been brutally trafficked, abused, molested and raped—just like girls in developing nations. Yet they were not usually perceived as victims. Instead they were cast as “hos,” prostitutes or “bad girls” dispatched to youth detention centers. No one was talking about educational initiatives, micro loans, psychiatric services or human rights for them.
Now, years later, these girls remain at the margins, forgotten and judged. There are few, if any, safe havens or gender specific, trauma-based programs for vulnerable girls. As the founder and executive director of a U.S.-based human rights and advocacy organization, I continue to see these girls, left behind in abusive homes, locked down in detention facilities or on street corners.
There is a rightful public outcry against the severe exploitation and trafficking of girls in Europe, Africa and Asia. A growing and powerful movement is emerging to shine light on girls in developing nations who are denigrated or cut down by violence. It is time to do that for girls in America, too—for girls like Shaniya who deserve to be safe and loved.
